INS Sunayna's Visit to the Port of Durban

In an effort to bolster India’s maritime partnerships and align with the vision of “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR), INS Sunayna made a significant visit to the Port of Durban, South Africa, from August 21st to August 25th, 2023.

This visit not only reaffirmed India’s commitment to enhancing regional security and cooperation but also served as a testament to the thriving relations between the two nations.

During this engaging visit, the dedicated personnel from the Indian Navy and the South African Navy actively participated in a wide array of professional and training interactions. These interactions encompassed deck visits, friendly sports fixtures, and crucial joint training sessions focused on various vital aspects of naval operations, including navigation, firefighting, damage control, and Visit Board Search & Seize procedures. In a remarkable gesture that echoed the sentiment of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family), a joint yoga session was conducted onboard INS Sunayna, fostering camaraderie and unity among the Indian and South African Navy personnel.

On the 23rd of August, 2023, INS Sunayna opened its doors to visitors, providing a unique opportunity for the local populace to explore the capabilities and significance of the ship. The Consul General of India in Durban, Dr. Thelma John David, graced the occasion with her presence. During her visit, she gained insights into the ship’s role and the exceptional capabilities it brings to the table.

A pivotal moment during the visit was the Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) conducted between INS Sunayna and the South African Navy Ship SAS King Sekhukhune I, just off the coast of Durban. This exercise exemplified the spirit of jointness and interoperability, essential for strengthening the maritime capabilities and readiness of both nations.

The successful conclusion of this visit underscores the shared commitment of the Indian and South African Navies to nurture and promote maritime cooperation and partnership. It reflects their unwavering dedication to fostering stability and security in the region, aligning with the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s SAGAR initiative.
