INS Tir Engages in Exercise Cutlass Express – 24 in Seychelles.NS Tir, the lead ship of India’s First Training Squadron (1TS), recently participated in Exercise Cutlass Express – 24 (CE – 24) held at Port Victoria, Seychelles from February 26 to March 08, 2024. This exercise, aimed at enhancing maritime security in the region, was inaugurated by the President of Seychelles, with dignitaries from India, USA, and African countries in attendance. NS Tir’s participation highlights India’s commitment to regional maritime cooperation and security.

NS Tir Engages in Exercise Cutlass Express – 24 in Seychelles

Key Highlights of the Exercise:

  1. Engagement with Friendly Foreign Countries: NS Tir actively engaged with participants from 16 friendly foreign countries during Exercise Cutlass Express. This engagement included theoretical and practical training on Maritime Interdiction Operations, Visit Board Search and Seizure procedures, and Diving operations.
  2. Demonstration of Boarding Operations: During the sea phase of the exercise, NS Tir’s Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) team boarded the Seychelles Coast Guard (SCG) ship LE Vigilant, demonstrating procedures of boarding operations. This demonstrated the readiness and capabilities of the Indian Navy in conducting such operations.
  3. Joint Diving Operations: Indian divers, along with US and Seychelles divers, undertook joint diving operations post a rigorous training week. This joint operation showcased the cooperation and interoperability between the three navies in conducting diving operations.
  4. Visit by US Navy Deputy Commander: R Adm Calvin M Foster, Deputy Commander of the US Navy 6th Fleet, visited NS Tir during the exercise. He shared his views on the importance of maritime cooperation and the shared commitment in the region, appreciating the crucial role played by the Indian Navy.
  5. Closing Ceremony: The exercise culminated at a closing ceremony held at the Seychelles Defence Academy, Ile Perseverance, on March 08, 2024. This ceremony marked the successful completion of the exercise and highlighted the camaraderie among the participating navies.

Joint EEZ Surveillance with Seychelles Coast Guard:

Prior to Exercise Cutlass Express, INS Tir undertook joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance with the Seychelles Coast Guard from March 01 to March 03, 2024. This joint surveillance effort demonstrated the commitment of both navies to enhancing maritime security and cooperation in the region.

Professional Exchanges and Philanthropic Activities:

  • During its stay in Seychelles, NS Tir conducted professional exchanges,
  • Cross-deck visits, and friendly sports fixtures with the Seychelles Defence Forces.
  • The Indian Naval band also performed at the National Museum in Port Victoria, entertaining a large crowd.
  • Additionally, a philanthropic activity was undertaken, where provisions and stores were donated for the elderly,
  • Showcasing the humanitarian aspect of the Indian Navy’s engagements.

Courtesy Calls and Cooperation:

Senior Officer, First Training Squadron, Capt Anshul Kishore, paid courtesy calls on Seychelles officials, including Designated Minister Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, Seychelles Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Brig Michael Rosette, Chief of Defence Forces – Seychelles Defence Force, and Shri Kartik Pande, High Commissioner of India to Seychelles. During these calls, cooperation and goodwill gestures were discussed, and spares for SCG ships and aircraft were handed over towards capacity building.

Conclusion:

The deployment of INS Tir in Seychelles and its participation in Exercise Cutlass Express highlights the close ties between the Indian Navy and regional navies. These engagements not only foster interoperability but also build bridges of friendship, furthering maritime security and cooperation in the region.
