  1. Extensive Plantation Programs:
  • Coal/Lignite PSUs undertake plantation programs with native species across various sites, including overburden dumps, haul roads, mine peripheries, and residential colonies.
  • Collaborations with scientific institutions ensure expertise in plantation efforts, facilitating the development of eco-restoration sites and multi-tiered plantation schemes.

2. Diverse Approach to Plantation

  • The plantation program encompasses various tree species, including shade-giving trees, forestry species, medicinal plants, fruit-bearing trees, timber value trees, and ornamental/avenue plants.

  • Over the past five years, Coal/Lignite PSUs have planted more than 235 lakh saplings over an area exceeding 10,784 hectares, significantly enhancing the carbon sink.

Innovative Miyawaki Plantation Method

  • Recently adopted by Coal/Lignite PSUs, the Miyawaki plantation method aims to establish dense forests in a short span, replicating natural biodiversity.
  • This method involves planting indigenous tree species at high densities, promoting rapid growth and self-sustainability.
  • Trees achieve remarkable growth within three years, contributing to the creation of heightened carbon sinks and resilient ecosystems.

Case Study: Miyawaki Plantation in MCL

  • Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) adopted the Miyawaki method in Kulda Open Cast Project (OCP) at Subalaya village.
  • Species planted include Arjun, Asan, Sal, Bija, Karanj, Guava, Mango, and more.
  • Approximately 15 hectares of Miyawaki plantation have been undertaken in and around coal mines in the current fiscal year.
